United Workers Party Condemns Incitement to Violence

Press Release

The United Workers Party condemns in the strongest terms a statement made last night on social media by a well-known political operative of the St. Lucia Labour Party.

In the Facebook post the individual stated, “Dear St. Lucia, House of Parliament is your Capitol Hill!!”

This statement was made in the context of what was a shocking news day around the world when it was broadcast on live TV the invasion of the Capitol Building in Washington, DC where the Senate was in session ratifying the voting results in the recently concluded US Presidential Election.

In what transpired on Capitol Hill yesterday, four persons are reported to have been killed and armed officers confronted mobs which invaded the Senate chamber and damaged property.

The Facebook statement also follows constant rhetoric from the St. Lucia Labour Party which alludes to violence.

The United Workers Party calls on law enforcement to investigate this very reckless and alarming statement made without fear for the world to see.

Too often incidents which have resulted in violence and even death were preceded by tell-tale signs on social media and conversations in public.

Are we to wait for the worst case scenario before we take preventative measures? These words are no less than the seeds to domestic terrorism.

A pattern of behaviour has been identified with this individual dating back a number of years without a word of caution from the St. Lucia Labour Party.

What happened in Washington, DC yesterday should cause us all to be wary and concerned about seemingly idle statements made by individuals who are well known to the public.

The United Workers Party calls on the members of leadership of the St. Lucia Labour Party to disassociate themselves from this individual and condemn, in no uncertain terms, her statements which are nothing short of an attempt at domestic terrorism.

This statement, and those made previously, cry out for police action and the loudest of condemnation by all Saint Lucians. Those words of incitement have no place in Saint Lucia.
