Homicide #11 – Is Saint Lucia Under Siege?

Semi automatic handgun

Following frighteningly quick on the heels of the homicide at Rose Hill yesterday of Peter Desir, alias ‘Top Man’ of Pavee, Saint Lucians are waking up to the shooting death of Peter Satney, 52, of Cedars.

According to family Peter Satney was on his way to work about 5:30 am. as he usually does on a daily basis when screams in the vicinity of the shooting were heard by residents of the area. Upon investigation the victim’s body was found laying in the street with multiple gunshot wounds.

In yesterday’s homicide a Courts’ contractor, with his job identification still around his neck, was sitting in a vehicle in the Rose Hill area when a lone gunman walked up and shot him once in the head about 4 pm.

These latest shooting follow on the heels of what has been a record month for homicides in Saint Lucia. Citizens have been taking to the airwaves and social media lamenting the high rate of gun violence on the island. Only yesterday, radio talk show hosts Andre Paul and Russell Lake on Radio 100 discussed what could cause the depraved violence which has shocked the nation during this first month of the new year.

A little more than two weeks ago Sunday 8th. January 2017 was dubbed ‘Black Sunday’ because of the alarming number of killings on that date when one man was shot dead by police,  three men were shot dead at Jacmel by assailants, and one man stabbed to death by his girlfriend at Grand Riviere, Gros Islet.

Meanwhile, statements by authorities have done little to bolster the confidence of the citizens as these crimes continue with no signs of relief. Many residents are now calling for a major offensive against criminals and determined effort to rid the streets of guns which now seem to be flowing into the island unabated.

Since the first homicide of the new year on January 8 in Gros Islet, the death toll now stands at 11 in nineteen days.
