Sometimes the gall and utter stupidity of what is spewed on social media numbs the senses, and renders any attempt at excusing the deplorable and unashamed drivel practically impossible.
Imagine my bewilderment and utter surprise when accosted earlier today, by a clearly ridiculous comment that the ambassadors seated at the head table of the just concluded Prime Minister’s Independence Ball, reminded the poster of “The Help” – a 2011 drama set in the civil rights movement of the 1960s detailing the African American maids’ point of view on the white families for which they work, and the hardships they went through on a daily basis.
But you see, the only context that some deliberately blind people see, is pure unadulterated racism encouraged and incited by abject politicization, and an un-quenched desire to score cheap political points on social media.
Nevermind that everyone of those ambassadors seated there have collectively, since our independence in 1979, had their countries hand over to Fair Helen, hundreds, if not billions of dollars of their taxpayers’ money to fund our projects, hospitals, schools, roads, and other significant infrastructural works. When hurricane Tomas and other natural disasters ravaged our island, it was these same reminders of “The Help” who answered our calls for help.
Cuba, which has given immeasurable support in education, technical assistance, agriculture, and friendship is also represented in that photo by its ambassador. Why would such friendship and goodwill cause one to think of “The Help” if not only for the colour of their skin? Shame, shame, shame!
These same countries came to the assistance of our brothers and sisters in Dominica, Tortola, St. Martin, Antigua and Barbuda, and other islands which were utterly destroyed by the merciless winds and rain of last year’s hurricane season. Apparently some of you want the money and aid from those countries but not the colour of their hand? How bigoted – and racist. Your pathetic excuses and back pedaling, in the face of public criticism, will not absolve you of your ridiculous assertions.
Just for the record, seated at the head table were diplomats from Cuba, Chile, Germany, among others, accompanied by their wives.
Events like the ball are always an opportunity to network, to discuss critical issues, and an opportunity to make new connections for future opportunities. It is the standard of diplomacy in organizing functions to develop friendships, which one day could be beneficial.
The waitresses and other persons employed at Sandals Grande made conscious decisions to work there, attending to ALL visitors. But perhaps the detractor of the prime minister forgot that tourism is the largest segment of Saint Lucia’s economy. Perhaps it was forgotten that all our diplomats and ministers, and prime ministers, both past and present, attend functions just like this at the United Nations and other international agencies and institutions like COP, UNDP, UNICEF, World Bank, United Nations General Assembly, all having the very same make up as that witnessed on Wednesday night here in Saint Lucia.
Another self serving buffoon chose to describe the head table ambassadors “like something out of The Purge.” – a thriller set in America ravaged by crime and overcrowded prisons, where the government sanctions an annual 12-hour period during which all criminal activity — including murder — is legal. You braying jackass extraordinaire! Seriously!
What the jackasses fail to mention is the other tables at the prime minister’s Ball which comprised Saint Lucians and all shades of black and white. They also failed to mention that the head table comprised ambassadors from countries which Prime Minister Allen Chastanet wanted to thank for their countries’ continued support and assistance for Saint Lucia.
These mindless and repulsive comments all fall in line with previously, and equally distasteful comments, made when one who suffered from chagweh pouvoir promised to write to foreign investors advising them not to invest in Saint Lucia. Or when another wrote to the British urging them not to approve the appointment of our latest High Commissioner in London.
There will always be the denials and rebuttals designed to coverup the real intent of these comments, but most of us were not born yesterday and understand very well the shameless intent behind such astounding nonsense.
You are inciteful racists with no damn shame, peddling nonsense to score cheap points to gain attention to yourselves. At the end of the day, the only thing you can accomplish from your delusional ramblings is harm to your country’s image. Fortunately, you are a minority, and you know it. Your desperate attempts to embarrass this country have failed, and will continue to fail.
Saint Lucia’s success will be your greatest punishment. Keep braying!
