Menell - Saint Lucia

In what can only be described as a trouncing of immense proportions, Menell, Saint Lucia’s calypso darling, placed last among a field of seven other female contestants at Festival Village in Montserrat last night.

In an event which was streamed live, Barbadian calypsonian Chrystal Cummins-BecklesĀ  retained her crown in the Queen of Queens Regional Female Calypso Monarch competition. This is her third consecutive win since 2013. The 2015 show was canceled.

Amid initial light showers the Queen of Queens calypso contest kicked off a little more than half an hour late. Stiff competition came in the form of other accomplished female calypso queens from around the region – Chrystal Cummins-Beckles from Barbados, Shaunelle McKenzie (St Vincent & the Grenadines), Shakiya (St. Maarten), Caribbean Queen (USVI), Queen Kibi (St Kitts), Roxxy (Anguilla), and Khandie (Montserrat).

Menell got off to a shaky start with “An Eye For An Eye” in which she portrayed a judge meting out justice to lawbreakers. Her second round rendition of “One Caribbean” fell flat with what was described by ZJB radio commentators as “flat and too wordy” and “not being memorable.”

Nevertheless, the remarkable story of the night was the final judges results being announced less than 15 minutes after the performance of the last singer – something unheard of in Saint Lucia.

Final results:

1) Barbados – Chrystal Cummins-Beckles (2013, 2014, 2016)
2) St. Vincent – Shaunelle McKenzie
3) Anguilla – Roxxy
4) St. Kitts – Queen Kibi
5) St. Maarten – Shakiya
6) USVI – Caribbean Queen
7) Montserrat – Khandie
8) St. Lucia – Menelle (2012)

Here are Menell’s two performances in order of appearance: “An Eye For An Eye” and “One Caribbean”
