CASTRIES – Friday, December 2, 2016 – The Saint Lucia Air and Sea Ports Authority (SLASPA) says that all is place to facilitate the Barrel Trade this Holiday Season. SLASPA and the Customs and Excise Department are working jointly to ensure that customers are able to clear their goods as efficiently as possible during the expected holiday uptick in imports.
The Authority has opened up Shed 7 to handle the upsurge in barrel clearance demand over the holiday season, and indicated that SLASPA’s Port and Customs personnel are stationed onsite to ensure that customers are able to clear their barrels in a well-organized manner-improving customer service delivery. SLASPA has employed a dedicated Clerk to assist with data entry of trucker information and has stationed a Port Police Officer to deal specifically with issuance of passes for port visitors.
Customers are advised to have proper identification available before coming to the Port, and that and that all documents have been received from their agents in order to ensure smooth processing. SLASPA urges customers to take note of the following tips when clearing barrels:
- No more than two (2) persons will be allowed to enter the port compound per transaction.
- Children under 12 years will not be allowed on the port compound.
- Please observe all signs and instructions on the port compound e.g. designated parking areas, exits and waiting areas.
- Please remember to exercise due caution because you will be moving around in an area where cargo carriers and container hauling equipment operate. Customers also have the option of contacting a broker to clear goods on their behalf or utilizing the Broker available at the Port.
The Christmas Barrels Concession is in effect from December 1, 2016 to February 15, 2017. The maximum value of the two barrels is EC$2500. Items that qualify for this concession will attract Customs service charges at the rate of 6%.
